Pathway to Principalship NZ

Step confidently into principalship

Moving from deputy or assistant principal to headship is an exciting leap—one that comes with new challenges and responsibilities. Pathway to Principalship NZ is a Micro-PLD programme designed to equip experienced DPs and APs with the leadership capability, strategic understanding and confidence needed to step into a principal role.

Grounded in the realities of Aotearoa New Zealand schools, this programme offers short, practical modules focused on cultural responsiveness and systems leadership—so you can grow without stepping away from your current responsibilities.

Why choose this programme?

  • Built for the NZ context – grounded in local legislation, Te Tiriti commitments, and the unique demands of our education system.

  • Tailored for aspiring principals – specifically designed for deputy and assistant principals preparing for headship.

  • Micro-PLD format – modular learning that fits around your busy schedule, with opportunities to apply learning in your own school.

  • Completely self-paced – drop in and out at your own leisure and complete modules when it suits you.

What you’ll learn

3. Leading learning, curriculum and professional growth

Develop strategies to lead curriculum design and implementation. Foster professional learning communities that improve teaching and learning.

4. Data literacy, evaluation and improvement inquiry

Use data effectively to inform school-wide decisions. Engage in improvement cycles that drive positive change.

5. People leadership: coaching, performance and wellbeing systems

Lead appraisal and performance processes with empathy and rigour. Build systems that support staff wellbeing and resilience.

6. Systems leadership: finance, property and health & safety

Gain confidence in managing school finances and property portfolios. Understand obligations around health, safety and compliance.

7. Governance, boards and public accountability
